David Owen is an arbitrator, mediator and barrister based at 20 Essex Street, a leading commercial law set of barristers’ chambers, with offices in London and Singapore. He has over 30 years of experience of dealing with international commercial disputes, and he has been described in the Chambers UK directory of lawyers as “a figure right at the heart of the commercial dispute resolution world”.

He became a barrister in 1983. He was accredited as a mediator in 2002, and was appointed as a QC in 2006.

He regularly arbitrates and mediates complex, cross border disputes. His arbitral and mediation appointments include matters relating to: share sales; joint ventures; partnership; banking & finance; international trade & commodities; shipping & energy, corporate fraud, professional negligence, product liability and insurance/reinsurance. He frequently acts as an arbitrator and panel chairman, in a wide variety of arbitrations, dealing with both institutional and ad hoc arbitral proceedings.

He has lectured on mediation and arbitration in London, Singapore and Germany. He is on the CEDR Faculty of mediation trainers, and for several years was responsible for running a London mediation service. For many years he edited MacGillivray, a leading textbook on English insurance law.

He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators; the London Court of International Arbitration; the Civil Mediation Council; the London Maritime Arbitrators’ Association (supporting member), and the Bar Council ADR Committee. He is a panel member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Mediator Panel); the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration Arbitrator Panel and the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration.
